What Your Feet Can Tell You About Your Health

Your feet are often the first part of your body that can tip you off to a larger health issue. For instance, their distance from your heart makes them often the first place to detect signs of circulatory issues. Since April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, the foot experts here at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC wanted to discuss a few other things your feet can tell you about your health.

If you have any of the following issues, it’s time to give your podiatrist a call:

Foot Cramps – Chronically cramped feet can point to a lack of certain vitamins and minerals in your diet. Potassium, calcium, and Vitamin D work together to support your tendon, ligament, and muscle functions in your feet and ankles.

Numbness and tingling – The “pins and needles” feeling can be caused by a larger nerve damage issue. If you’re diabetic or if you smoke cigarettes, peripheral neuropathy could be the cause for your feet losing sensation.

Dry skin – If your feet are dry and flaky, it could mean you have an allergic reaction to something. If you’re diabetic, neuropathy can also contribute to dry feet.

Chronic open woundsUlcers and foot sores that won’t heal or keep returning are another potential sign of diabetic nerve issues. These wounds could also be caused by an immune system issue.

Swollen anklesSwelling in your lower extremities could be a sign of lower kidney function causing water retention in that area. Chronic swelling in the legs and feet could also be a symptom of heart failure, renal failure, or liver failure.

Toes change appearance – If your toes have taken on a rounder shape, it could point to lung cancer or pulmonary dysfunction. If you’ve started losing hair on your toes, it could be due to poor blood circulation, especially if you’re a smoker.

If you come across any of these abnormalities, or any other foot issue, it’s time to contact a podiatrist. Dr. David R. Sullivan has the expertise to diagnose and treat a myriad of foot complications. Our conveniently located office in Westfield is open Monday through Friday. Head to our website or give us a call to schedule an appointment today.
