Should I Wear Orthotics with Winter Boots?

Can you wear orthotics with winter boots? That’s a big question and an important one. With cold weather coming in Indiana, we’re pulling out the winter boots, and wondering if our orthotics will fit this type of footwear. Last month, we offered tips for buying boots online. And this month we’ll explore why (and how) you should wear orthotics with winter boots.

Why Orthotics and Winter Boots Belong Together

Remember why we wear orthotics: these devices help support and balance your foot and ankle. Winter boots have a different job: protecting your feet from the cold, ice and snow. But sometimes, those boots aren’t fitted with enough support and structure to prevent foot pain.

Now, certain winter boots - like Sorel waterproof boots - are built to support your feet. Even so, if you wear your orthotics in spring, summer and fall, your feet will need that support all winter. This is why you’ll want to put a pair of orthotics in your winter boots.

Fitting Orthotics to your Boots

Unfortunately, orthotics that were designed to fit into your running shoes may not fit well in your boots. Especially if you have a full-length orthotic that runs along your entire shoe sole. Luckily, orthotics come in many shapes, lengths and sizes.

It’s one reason why many of our patients prefer to buy two sets of orthotics. A second pair of orthotics allow you to feel supported in different styles of shoes and boots. It can also save you the time of swapping orthotics every morning as you change shoes. Plus, it may extend the lifespan of your orthotic devices since less wear and tear means the orthotics will remain effective for a longer period.

As an added bonus, if you choose to purchase a second pair of orthotics this fall, you may be able to use funds in a flexible spending account (FSA), health savings account (HSA) or a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). If left unused by the end of this year, those dollars might not roll over so a second pair of orthotics could be a win for your feet and your wallet. Check with your employer to confirm the eligibility of using your health funds.

Of course, not everyone may want two sets of orthotics. You can still fit orthotics into winter boots by taking a little length off your first pair. If you select a ¾ length orthotic device, you’ll still enjoy arch support. In fact, this device will run until the ball of your foot. You’ll still get wearing benefits such as reduced foot and heel pain along with the ability to wear your orthotics with almost every shoe in your closet!

Ready for a warm and supportive winter season? Come in and get fitted for a boot-friendly custom orthotic. Your feet will see this as an early holiday gift!
