Dancing While Social Distancing

We’re all spending extra time at home practicing social distancing, so why not improve your dancing skills and boost your foot and ankle health? Dancing is a fun way to exercise and share your creativity. It’s also a great way to improve blood circulation to your feet. The team at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC has a few suggestions for you — before you begin your dance party.

Stretch before you move

From your youngest child to your oldest family member, stretching is important. This activity prepares the body for movement and prevents injuries. Remember, stretching shouldn’t cause pain. If you feel discomfort, stop. Take advantage of online resources for safe, fun ways of stretching before exercise. Sprains are a common injury when our patients skip stretching.

Clear your space

To avoid trips, bumps, and falls, consider moving around furniture in the largest room of your home. Sharp corners can pose hazards to your family. A bump into the corner of the table may lead to a damaged toenail that may become ingrown or fungal. Toes are sensitive to bumps and bruises; avoid a fracture. Rugs without non-slip support are also a tripping hazard. Stay ahead of injuries by planning in advance for how to best use your space.

Know your moves

Dancing is fun, and it allows you to be expressive. However, don’t forget to consider your overall health. If you recently experienced a foot or ankle injury, you may need to sit out this activity. Instead, you can control the playlist. Know when to rest and when to modify a move. You don’t have to dance like the professionals — or your kids. For families, the best part is when everyone is together.
