Take it Outside

For many people across the country, family exercise outdoors is one way to still practice social distancing, while keeping an eye on health. The weather may not always be sunny and filled with blue skies, but take advantage of the time to be outside. Continue to follow the guidance of health officials. Even from a distance, we are here to support you. Here are a few recommendations from the team at Westfield Foot and Ankle, LLC.

Stay hydrated

We know you’ll bring hand sanitizer, but don’t forget to bring plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps to avoid painful cramps. It is also a refreshing relief after a great workout. Be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, and do not begin a workout feeling dehydrated. Also, avoid caffeinated drinks and sugary beverages; water is recommended.

Protect your skin

The warmth from the sun can bring so much joy. The sun’s rays can also cause damage to your skin. This includes a malignant growth. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen before your workout. Be sure to follow the instructions and pay attention to when you may need to reapply the sunscreen. Protect your eyes and head by wearing sunglasses and a hat. Don’t skip this part while preparing to spend time outside.

Don’t overdo it

If the weather is beautiful, you may want to exercise a bit longer or run another mile. Be cautious and listen to your body. Exercise at your normal pace and allow your body to recover in between workouts. Overuse injuries include Achilles tendinitis. Instead of continuing your workout, switch to a cool-down activity. Stretch, rehydrate, and slow your pace.
