Make the Most of Your HSA: Using HSA Dollars for Foot and Ankle Care

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA), you may already use it to help pay for doctor visits, prescriptions, and other medical expenses. But did you know that HSA funds may also be useful for certain foot and ankle services and devices that are not covered by your health insurance?

For patients dealing with chronic foot problems, an HSA can provide another way to manage the cost of treatments that may otherwise require an out-of-pocket payment.

What Is an HSA?

A Health Savings Account is a tax-advantaged account available to individuals who are enrolled in qualifying high-deductible health plans. Money placed into an HSA can generally be used for eligible medical expenses, and unused funds typically remain available for future qualified expenses.

Because HSA rules can be specific, it is important to confirm that a particular treatment, device, or expense qualifies before using your HSA funds.

Using HSA Funds for Custom Orthotics

Custom orthotics are designed specifically for your feet and can help address a variety of biomechanical problems. Depending on your individual condition, orthotics may be recommended to help improve foot function, redistribute pressure, or provide additional support.

Insurance coverage for custom orthotics varies considerably. Some plans provide coverage under certain circumstances, while others may consider them a noncovered benefit.

When insurance does not cover a medically appropriate orthotic, patients may want to investigate whether their HSA can be used to pay for the expense. Eligibility can depend on the specific circumstances and applicable HSA rules, so patients should verify eligibility with their HSA administrator.

Laser Treatments for Chronic Foot Problems

Some podiatry practices offer laser-based treatments for certain chronic foot conditions. These treatments are not covered by any insurance plan, since they are considered elective, alternative, or outside the plan's covered benefits.

If you are considering a laser treatment for a chronic or acute foot condition, ask our office about the treatment, its expected benefits, and the associated cost. You can then check with your HSA administrator to determine whether the expense qualifies for reimbursement.

ToeFX Light Therapy for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, can be frustrating and difficult to treat. In addition to traditional treatment options, some podiatry practices offer light-based therapies such as the ToeFX system as part of their approach to treating fungal toenails.  Studies show a 73-81% rate of effectiveness.

Because specialized toenail fungus treatments may not be covered by health insurance, patients sometimes ask whether HSA funds can be used toward the cost.

The answer depends on whether the particular expense meets the applicable requirements for a qualified medical expense. Before treatment, patients should confirm eligibility with their HSA provider or administrator and keep appropriate receipts and documentation.

Don't Let Insurance Coverage Be the Only Question

When your insurance does not cover a treatment, that does not necessarily mean you have no options. An HSA may provide a tax-advantaged way to pay for certain eligible medical expenses.

If you are considering custom orthotics, laser treatment, ToeFX light therapy, or another service that is not covered by your insurance, ask our office about available treatment options and costs. We can help you understand the service and provide documentation or receipts as appropriate.

Remember: HSA eligibility is determined by applicable tax rules and your individual circumstances. Our office cannot guarantee that a particular expense will qualify. We recommend confirming eligibility with your HSA administrator before using HSA funds.

If you have questions about your foot or ankle condition or would like to discuss treatment options, contact our office to schedule an appointment.
