Understanding Bunions and Hammertoes
Bunions and hammertoes can affect your quality of life!
As a podiatrist I frequently see patients who are concerned about painful bumps, crooked toes, and difficulty finding comfortable shoes. Two of the most common conditions I treat are bunions and hammertoes. Although they may appear to be minor foot problems, they can gradually affect balance, mobility, and quality of life.
Bunions
Bunions can cause many foot issues.
A bunion is a structural deformity that develops at the base of the big toe. Over time, the big toe may angle toward the second toe, while the joint becomes more prominent along the inside of the foot. Bunions can be influenced by genetics, foot structure, arthritis, or years of wearing shoes that do not provide enough room. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, tenderness, and pain when walking or wearing certain footwear.
Hammertoes
Hammertoes can be painful.
Hammertoes occur when one or more smaller toes become bent at one of their joints. At first, the toe may remain flexible, but it can become rigid over time. Patients often develop corns, calluses, or discomfort where the toe rubs against the shoe. Hammertoes may result from muscle imbalance, inherited foot structure, trauma, or pressure caused by crowded footwear.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and your symptoms. In many cases, early care can provide significant relief. Wearing shoes with a wide toe box, using protective pads, and avoiding high heels may reduce pressure. Orthotics can also help support the foot and improve alignment. Gentle stretching and exercises may be beneficial for flexible hammertoes.
When pain persists or the deformity progresses, surgery may be considered. Bunion and hammertoe procedures are designed to correct the underlying structure, not simply remove a bump. The appropriate procedure depends on your foot, lifestyle, overall health, and the flexibility of the affected joints.
Living in Indiana means dealing with changing weather and seasonal activities, from walking outdoors in the summer to staying active indoors during colder months. Foot pain should not prevent you from enjoying either. If you notice persistent discomfort, corns, swelling, or changes in toe alignment, schedule an evaluation with a podiatrist.
The earlier bunions and hammertoes are assessed, the more treatment options you may have. Healthy feet are essential for staying active, and professional guidance can help you keep moving comfortably.
